History is an academic subject taught as part of a primary and secondary education. This chapter tackles the significance of history as a discipline in both primary and secondary levels. 


It gives the basics of history and lays a solid foundation of this subject. It traces the different definitions of history, the importance of studying history as a subject as well as the different ways by which information that constitutes history is obtained.


What is history?


History is the study of past events. People know what happened in the past by looking at things from the past including sources (like books, newspapers, scripts and letters), buildings and different types of artifacts (like pottery, tools, coins and human or animal remains.)


The notes is divided into four topics, which are: 


1. Meaning, importance and sources of History; 


2. Human evolution, technology and environment; 


3. Development of agriculture in pre-colonial African societies; Handicraft and mining industries in pre-colonial Africa; Trade in pre-colonial Africa; 


4. Development of social and political systems; and State organisation in Africa.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE


In teaching History teacher follow a specific syllabus which guides a teacher on what she or he should teach.


Also a teacher had a duty to break syllabus into scheme of work and lastly scheme of work should be broken into Lesson Plan. 


Important to note here are only two things which is class level competences and class level objective.


FORM ONE CLASS LEVEL COMPETENCES


1. Demonstrates the knowledge of the concept of History and appreciates the importance’s of History


2. Demonstrate the ability to examine the theories of the origin of Man and Evolution of man and Draw Conclusion.


3. Demonstrate ability to relate man’s development to the Environment and Technology


4. Demonstrates ability to relate Peoples economic activities to the development of their Social and Political Organization.


FORM ONE CLASS LEVEL OBJECTIVE’S 


This class level objective is measured at the end of the form one course. Therefore  at the end of every Topic, Teacher should measure the ability of students to:-


1. Explain the concept of History and appreciates the importance of History.


2. Explain the theories of the origin of Man and Evolution of man.


3. Relate man’s development to the Environment and Technology.


4. Explain how people’s economic activities influenced the development of their social and political Organization in Pre-colonial Africa.
