NECTA eServices: Equivalence Certificate (How to Apply for Equivalence Certificate Online)
Equivalence Certificate (EQUIVALENCE OF FOREIGN CERTIFICATES): An equivalence Certificate is the certificate issued to student to certify that the qualification/award offered in a foreign examination Board/Council is equivalent to the qualification/award in Tanzania. This service is offered online through which the applicant fills in and submits the online application form.
The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is Government Institution which was established by the Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973.
NECTA is responsible for the administration of all National Examinations and Assessments in Tanzania.
The decision to establish NECTA was a follow-up of an earlier move, in April 1971, when Tanzania Mainland pulled out of the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) to conduct her own examinations. Zanzibar pulled out of EAEC in 1970

An equivalence Certificate is the certificate issued to student to certify that the qualification/award offered in a foreign examination Board/Council is equivalent to the qualification/award in Tanzania.
Documents Required for Application
(a) Certification of Certificate.
(i) Certified copy of certificate done by the Foreign Examinations Boards/Councils in the country of study
OR
(ii) Coloured copy of certificate accompanied or attached with Verification report/Confirmation letter from
the Examination Board/Council in the Country of study.
(b) If the applicant fails to meet part (a) above, she/he must present original certificate(s) for verification during
collection of his/her equivalence certificate.
(c) Blue background coloured passport size photo.132 x 185 x 72 in JPEG format.
(d) A copy of one of the following identity cards: Voter’s ID, National ID, Driving license or Passport. Other IDs
will not be accepted).
Conditions for Equating Certificates
(a) Certificates to be equated MUST be issued by an accrediting Examinations Board/ Council mandated by
law to offer examinations and certificates.
(b) Institutional based certificates shall not be equated except certificates and/or Diploma in Education issued
by recognised Universities.
(c) Candidates holding foreign Advanced Secondary Education Certificates MUST have Prior-Entry
qualification(s) or Ordinary Level Certificate(s) with at least three (03) Credit passes and at least one (1)
principal pass for Advanced Level Certificate (ACSEE). Submission of both certificates (CSE & ACSE) is a
must.
(d) Certificates written in any language other than Kiswahili or English MUST be attached with official
translation from their respective country’s embassy or any other recognised institution (e.g. Alliance
Franchise or BAKITA etc).
(e) NECTA shall not equate foreign certificates obtained from foreign examinations conducted in centres
located in Tanzania which are not recognized by NECTA to offer foreign examinations and therefore do not
comply to Tanzania Act No. 21 of 1973 [CAP 107 Revised Edition 2002] of which supervision and
monitoring of Foreign Examinations writing in Tanzania MUST be done under NECTA.
(f) Payments
Payment of Tshs. 100,000/= has to be made for each certificate/academic document applied to
one of the following Banks: NMB, CRDB, NBC or via mobile phone payment system eg M - Pesa or Tigo
Pesa using control number generated.
Caution:-
➢ Read the instructions carefully before making any payment. The money once paid is NOT REFUNDABLE under any circumstances.
➢ A penalty fee of Tshs 35,000/- will be charged for any correction of applicant details raised after issuance of equivalence certificates (if an error/mistake is caused by the applicant).
➢ In case the equivalence certificate is lost/damaged, its reprint is issued upon request and payment of Tshs 100,000/- or Tshs. 150, 000/- if the re-print is lost.
