A school is a place where teaching and learning takes place.
The levels of schools are: pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools.
Ownership of schools include: public schools, private schools and religious schools.
Public schools are owned by the government. Private schools are owned by individuals and religious schools are owned by religious communities that are in Tanzania.
Origin of a school
Origin of a school is about how the school was started who started it and in which year.
You need to know the following about your school.
1. Is it a private, public or religious school?
2. In which year was the school started?
3. Who was the first head teacher?
4. How many pupils started the school?
School leadership
A leader is a person who leads and guides others.
A school cannot run without a leader. A leader in a school is called head teacher. A male head teacher is called headmaster and a female head teacher is called headmistress.
1. Head teacher: A school is headed by the head teacher. Head teachers are appointed by the district Education officers in case of government schools. Head teachers of private schools are appointed by the owners (directors) of those schools. Head teacher is assisted by the deputy or assistant head teacher.
2. Deputy head teacher: He/she assists the head teacher in running a school.
3. Discipline teacher is in-charge of discipline.
4. Academic teacher is in charge of academic matters such as preparing school timetable and examinations.
5. Teachers are also school leaders.
6. The Head boy/Head girl leads with other prefects such as class prefects. These are pupil’s leaders in a school. They guide other pupils in a school and link them with the administration.
School Symbols
School symbols are things that identify a school. These are:-
1. School song: It is a song that is sung during school assembly, graduation day and on school important days.
2. School boundary: Shows the area covered by the school.
3. School motto: A short sentence or phrase about what the school believes in. For example “Aim high.”
4. School badge: This is the logo or emblem of a school.
5. School uniform: All clothes worn by pupils including shoes.
Caring for school environment
Environment is anything around us. School environment includes all things in and nearby the school.
School environment include teaching and learning materials, buildings, furniture, vegetation and playgrounds.
Ways of keeping the environment clean
1. Watering plants.
2. Sweeping the compound.
3. Planting grass, trees and flowers.
4. Cleaning the classrooms and toilets.
5. Collecting wastes and burning them.
6. Putting rubbish in the dustbin.
7. Keeping walls of the buildings clean
Upholding the name of our school
Upholding the name of a school means keeping the school’s name high.
You can uphold the name of the school by doing the following:
(i) Performing well in class.
(ii) Performing well in external inter school competitions such as sports.
(iii) Being disciplined both at school and at home
(iv) Being smart at school, on the way and at home.
(v) Keeping the school environment clean.
(vi) Using polite language always wherever you are.
(vii) Helping the people in need.
(viii) Participating in religious activities in religious houses.
